How Chiropractic Can Help Numbness

Numbness is, most simply, a loss of sensation or feeling in a part of your body. Numbness is usually caused by irritation or compression of a branch of nerves either where they exit the spine or in your extremities. Peripheral nerves are nerves that have exited your spine. Damage to your peripheral nerves is called peripheral neuropathy. Diseases affecting the peripheral nerves, such as diabetes, also can cause numbness. Typically, numbness is similar to having your leg fall asleep. It can be in one small spot or it can cover a large area depending on what nerves, and how many of them, are involved.

Numbness works like this: imagine you were carrying a heavy bag or purse and your arm falls asleep. What is actually happening is you are putting pressure on the nerves going to your hand. This pressure, in essence, chokes off the messages that are sent to the brain, causing a decrease in your body’s awareness of your hand. Carpal tunnel is another example of this phenomenon. In carpal tunnel, the nerves going to your fingers and hand are compressed. The nerves can be compressed at different locations from your neck to your hand.

In order for us to determine if we can correct your numbness we must first identify the root cause of your numbness. We do this by taking a detailed history, taking x-rays, and by performing an extensive neurological exam. If we determine your numbness is caused by the nerves being entrapped, we must then find where it is being entrapped and correct the nerve irritation at its source. If we determine your numbness is not caused by nerve entrapment we will refer you to the proper specialist.

Chiropractic is not a treatment for numbness, but if it is determined that the underlying cause is due to nerve irritation caused by vertebral subluxation, then chiropractic is the only approach that will correct the cause in a safe and natural way.

Stay Chiropractic Healthy

Chiropractic not only restores the natural motion in each spinal segment, thus enabling that area to enjoy it’s full movement potential, but also enable healthier full body motion for a more functional and capable life.

Chiropractic enables the weight bearing abilities of the spine and skeletal structure to be optimized. This is critical whether you are lifting a bag of groceries, a toddler, or a heavy barbell.

Having your spine in a balanced and neutral position allows your body to hold itself upright with greater ease and with less resistance against gravity. This enables your muscular system to be more relaxed throughout the day. Coupled with more complete, fluid movement and efficient weight bearing, your body as a whole will enjoy a new level of efficiency.

By removing interfering factors in the nervous system, it is able to heal your body more efficiently and effectively from a cellular level.

Your body is constantly adapting to internal and external environmental factors. Your nervous system controls this adaptation. By improving nervous system function, adaptability also improves which keeps your body in a healthier state no matter what it encounters.

Our mission is to educate and lead as many people as possible toward optimal health.
